Job: Art Director
Based: London
Level: Junior
Salary: Undisclosed
Contract: Freelance
Applications Close: 25 March 2018

Soul Labels is a London-based polymath group exploring subculture art and ways to widen access to the creative industries. Our work encompasses everything from exhibitions and workshops to performance and product design.
Take a look: catalogue.

Our subject matter is broad. One month we could be running a panel discussion about the Wu-Tang Clan’s impact on hip-hop culture, and the next … commissioning artwork to celebrate unsung heroes of technology.

Our core vision is to become a cross between a museum and a record label – helping artists and designers develop sustainable careers, while educating and inspiring the public with depth and originality.

We are currently looking for a freelance art director to join the team and work closely with the creative director. The ideal candidate will be craft-oriented and adventurous, capable of producing anything from a book to cross-section illustrations, Instagram stories or signage.

The work would be a mixture of paid projects and voluntary in-house experiments. We will develop profit-share schemes if the latter become commercial ventures.

Our wishlist

  • Comfortable producing a range of marketing assets (print and digital) and eager to design merchandise and products

  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite , but you also love working with pencil, paintbrush and collage

  • Able to articulate ideas clearly and develop multiple concepts across media

  • You can meet a brief but also expand it (ie develop a product/merchandise line around a publication)

  • Experience of art directing photo shoots, plus successfully working with others such as web designers, videographers and printers in post production

  • You appreciate the power of design as a means of communication and can think strategically

  • Attention to detail and a commitment to originality

  • Able to draw out the beauty in the ordinary

  • Supportive, hardworking and hungry

  • Cool under pressure and able to hit deadlines

  • Passionate about community and bringing through new talent

  • Interested in cinema, design invitation, classic ads/album art catalogues

Is this you? Then please email your CV to together with relevant examples of the work you’re most proud of. A short covering letter would also be useful, outlining your journey so far, what inspires you and where you would like to go with Soul Labels.

We look forward to hearing from you.
